Displaced by conflict in Ivory Coast

Geneva, September 27, 2002

ACT partner Concerned Christian Community (CCC) in Liberia is closely watching the impact of the crisis in neighbouring Ivory Coast on Liberia. "We are praying for the situation and hope they can see reasons to amicably resolve their conflict", says Rev. Brown of CCC.

The organisation points out that it has been reported that about 1000 Liberian refugees in Ivory Coast were on their way back to Liberia through the eastern border with Danane in Ivory Coast. It cannot be foreseen yet how many more are making the decision to return.

Liberia is already stretched with a very serious internal displacement problem coupled with limited funding for programs. CCC has re-established its emergency psychosocial program in Totota and CARI (about 44 miles from the Liberian border town of Ganta) since after the rebel attack on the central Liberian town of Gbarnga.

Staff of ACT member Lutheran World Federation (LWF) will take part in an assessment mission in the border area.
