Southern Africa Floods 4/00

First of four relief flights to arrive Mozambique tomorrow

Geneva, march 3, 2000

Four ACT co-sponsored relief flights will take much needed relief goods to Mozambique over the coming weekend. The first plane is expected to arrive tomorrow with approximately 40 tons of relief goods.

The four flights will carry a total cargo of approximately 160 metric tons including plastic sheeting, emergency food, water purification tablets, tents, blankets, small motorboats, kitchen sets and medicines to cover some 20,000 people for three months against a number of common diseases. Three planes are planned to fly into the capital Maputo and one into Beira further north on the Mozambican coast.

In Mozambique the relief items will be distributed and used by ACT member Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the Red Cross Movement. The flights are sponsored by ACT-Danchurch Aid in co-operation with the Danish Red Cross and the Danish government.

ACT-LWF is carrying out relief work in several parts of Mozambique including crisis food assistance, temporary shelter, water supply and re-settlement of families who've lost their homes.
