As reports trickled in of people slowly returning to their homes, following the first democratic elections in more than 40 years in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), violence still flared in the east of the country, where government troops and rebels continued a grinding war. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced for nearly a decade after fleeing the conflict that has paralysed much of the country since 1998, and now, with people slowly returning home, it is a first and small step in the recovery of a country that has been mired in a humanitarian crisis for so long, and one that cannot simply be dismissed as ‘over’.
By combining their efforts, ACT members distributed food and non-food items, mosquito nets, blankets, temporary shelter materials and agricultural tools. Food items included rice, corn flour, beans, salt, cooking oil and dried fish combined with kitchen kits. Members also improved access to water, rehabilitated five health posts and conducted awareness-raising sessions on HIV and AIDS for at-risk communities.
