With this notification of the payment of Rapid Response Funds, the ACT Coordinating Office requests contributions from donors to replenish the Rapid Response Fund. This will enable a response to future requests for these funds.

Details of Payment

Emergency: Floods in northern Afghanistan

Date of Emergency: 23 – 30 April 2006

Implementing Partner: Hungarian Interchurch Aid (HIA)

Details of the Emergency: Following a series of floods in several provinces of Afghanistan, eleven villages in Gurziwan district in Faryab province, 5 villages in Khuram o Sarbagh district in Samangan Province as well as some areas in Baghlan Province have been the most seriously affected. In the three provinces a total of 2,400 families have been affected by the flooding. The death toll stands at 6.

Damages in Gurziwan district As the district is located in a valley, damages are serious. A total of 1,200 families have been affected, 500 houses have been destroyed, 400 families have lost their cultivated agricultural lands, 62 main water canals have been destroyed as well as 3 mills and 6 schools damaged. A total of 3,086 livestock have been lost, and 1,749 jeribs of agricultural land destroyed. Hungarian Interchurch Aid wishes to provide emergency food assistance to the most vulnerable families in the above mentioned areas.

Beneficiary information and location of response: Hungarian Interchurch Aid wishes to assist 1,000 families in the mostly affected villages: Gharbyan, Takhara, Dare zang, Dare jawz, Pkhalsoz. The villages are situated in Gurziwan district in Faryab province.

Proposed assistance : HIA local staff have carried out an assessment mission to the above mentioned flood affected areas, and on the basis of the information gathered there and after co-ordinating with the Red Cross and the Province authorities, they have compiled the current RRF request. HIA Field Office has co-ordinated with other ACT members, Christian Aid and Norwegian Church Aid, in the areas concerned and has consequently modified its original proposal in order to avoid duplications. HIA wishes to distribute relief packages each containing wheat – 49 kg sack, tea – 1kg, sugar – 3kg and 6 litres oil. Each package costs US$ 35.

The ACT Co-ordinating Office has approved the use of US$ 50,000 towards the budget from its Rapid Response Fund and would be grateful to receive contributions to wholly or partially replenish this payment.
