ACT Appeal

Bolivia - LABO61

Assistance to Flood affected

Geneva, 24 February 2006

Appeal Target: US$ 58,759

Unprecedented heavy rains lashed Bolivia in January and February 2006. In the highlands alone rainfall has been nearly three times the annual average. Consequently the highlands and the Amazon River basin were severely flooded, causing serious damage to houses, crops, roads and other basic infrastructure. Rural families, who rely mainly on subsistence farming, were badly affected.

The most affected areas are located in the departments of Santa Cruz and La Paz y Beni. The government declared a state of emergency at the beginning of February and appealed for international assistance. According to the latest reports 33,856 families have been affected and 12,742 are in need of humanitarian aid. To date 13 persons have died as a result of the floods and 9,374 families have been evacuated. Some families have taken refuge in tents in nearby communities, but others are simply left to their own means.

ACT member in Bolivia Lutheran World Relief (LWR), through its partner Fundación Tierra, is proposing to assist 200 families in 10 communities of the Cuatro Cañadas municipality in the Santa Cruz Department. They will provide seeds and sheep to contribute to the economic recovery of the affected families. They will also provide training in disaster mitigation and preparedness and promote reforestation activities.

The Methodist Church of Bolivia is still working in their proposal. This appeal might be revised.

Project Completion Date: December 31, 2006
