West and Central Java Earthquake/Tsunami

An earthquake of a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale struck off the south-west coast of Java on July 17, triggering a tsunami that crashed into the southern coast of Indonesia’s Java Island. The National Co-ordination Board for Disaster Management (BAKORNAS PB) reported on 24 July that the human toll stands at 637 dead, 543 injured, and 165 missing. The earthquake/tsunami has affected villages along the coast-line of West Java, Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces. Houses, churches, mosques, stores, government offices, fishing boats and public facilities were destroyed or damaged (totally, heavy or light). While the death toll is lower than in the last earthquake in May 2006, widespread damage of houses resulted in a large number of traumatised displaced people.

ACT members Yakkum Emergency Unit Yakkum Emergency Unit (YEU/ACT), Yayasan Tanggul Bencana di Indonesia (YTBI/ACT) or Yayasan Tanggul Bencana (YTBI/ACT) and Church World Service Indonesia (CWSI/ACT) have been responding to the emergency from day one and continue to assist the affected population.

This appeal includes three-months programmes of all ACT members in Indonesia. YEU/ACT will focus on the provision of health services, supplementary feeding, psychosocial support and temporary shelter. CWS/ACT will focus on water & sanitation in co-operation with NCA/ACT and psychosocial support. YTBI/ACT will provide psychosocial support, latrines, livelihood inputs. All ACT members will work with the communities and local partners and provide training and disaster preparedness inputs.
