Appeal
Target: US$5,194,390 Balance Requested
from ACT Alliance: US$3,407,929 On 27 May 2006 an earthquake struck near the historic city of Yogyakarta
on the island of Java, Indonesia. With its epicentre in the Indian Ocean
at about 33 kilometers south of Bantul district, the quake measured
6.3 on the Richter Scale and lasted for 52 seconds, resulting in major
devastation, in particular in the districts of Bantul in Yogyakarta
Province and Klaten in Central Java Province. In Yogyakarta Province,
as of 15 June 2006 loss of life due to the quake stands at 4,689 with
20,042 people reported injured. In Central Java Province the death toll
stands at 1,063 with 18,526 injured. The earthquake has affected villages
all across Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces. Many houses, churches,
mosques, stores, government offices, and public facilities were destroyed
or damaged. Widespread damage of houses resulted in a large number of
displaced people which is posing a challenge for the humanitarian response,
particularly in health and sanitation. This appeal is the expected main appeal ASID 61 replacing the preliminary
appeal issued on 31 May 2006. ACT members Yakkum Emergency Unit Yakkum Emergency Unit (YEU/ACT),
Yayasan Tanggul Bencana di Indonesia (YTBI/ACT) or Yayasan Tanggul Bencana
(YTBI/ACT) and Church World Service Indonesia (CWSI/ACThave been responding
to the emergency from day one and continue to assist the affected population
with the following activities:
