Bam Earthquake Relief & Rehabilitation

Massive loss of lives in the Bam earthquake has left deep scars on the local community. The aftermath of the disaster has seen the local population trying to cope with loss of loved ones, homes and personal belongings. Contrary to material possessions that can be replaced over time, the loss of family members in the earthquake has been a traumatic experience which requires urgent attention.

Recognising the magnitude of the humanitarian needs of the population in and around Bam, the present shortfalls in provision of aid by the international community, ACT members ACT Netherlands (Kerkinactie and ICCO) and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) have joined in their efforts to accommodate the homeless and provide psycho-social assistance to the most needy. Their program is based on the philosophy that the local non-governmental organisations play the pivotal role in the emergency response and rehabilitation and as such, require all the support by their international counterparts.

The Revision 1 of the ACT appeal for Iran MEIN- 42 includes a joint program of ACT Netherlands and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance based on results of thorough needs assessments and networking done by the expertise deployed in the country.

The local population will benefit from the following provisions:

  • prefabricated shelter in the city of Bam
  • semi-permanent, earthquake resistant housing
  • common spaces for women and youth
  • financial assistance to Iranian NGOs working with youth and women
  • vocational training for youth and disabled
  • disaster preparedness and search & rescue training for Iranian NGOs
