5 October, 2004
On 18 September
2004, Hurricane Jeanne lashed northern parts of Haiti with heavy rains
causing extensive damage and flooding in urban and rural areas, particularly
in the north-west in the Artibonite Provinces. Gonaives, the fourth
main city in Haiti, was severely affected by flooding and mudslides
which destroyed large areas of the city and its surrounding communities.
The latest official
reports from the Directorate of Civil Protection (DCP) in Haiti indicate
that almost 300,000 persons were affected, 4,471 houses were destroyed,
1,330 people lost their lives, 2,601 were injured and 1,056 are still
missing. In rural areas, particularly Artibonite North and South the
floods destroyed most of the food crops and livestock. ACT members in
Haiti, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and Diakonie
Emergency Aid (DEA) are proposing to respond in the area of Gonaives
and the north and west of the Artibonite where ACT Haiti is present
through LWF partners Federation Protestant d’Haiti and Service Chretien
