In the Mano River region of West Africa, Guinea has remained a relatively peaceful country in the midst of instability which has plagued the region for over a decade with the worst conflicts occurring in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Ivory Coast. The hundreds of thousands of people fleeing the conflicts, sought refugee in the relatively peaceful Guinea over the decade. The restoration of peace in Sierra-Leone has however, seen most refugees from Sierra Leone return home. But Guinea still remains home to many other refugees from Liberia and Ivory Coast as conflict in these countries remain only partially resolved. The alleged presence near the borders of Guinea and Liberia of armed Liberian factions responsible for ousting President Charles Taylor’s Government adds to the fragile peace in the region.

The Lutheran World Federation/World Service (LWF/WS) has been working in the Guinea Forest Region since 2001 providing services to the refugees in the UNHCR-run refugee camps. In this appeal LWF/WS is appealing for funds to continue providing for the basic social-economic needs of the refugees in 2004 in partnership with UNHCR. In addition, they would like to work with local communities directly affected by the presence of refugees to address any negative repercussions brought about by the refugees. The total number of beneficiaries in the appeal is estimated at 90,000 refugees and 10,000 local people living near the camps. The projects will include; income generating, agriculture, education, health, psycho-social and environmental activities. The total budget is estimated at $1.4 million with $670,000 coming from UNHCR and $777,000 being requested from the ACT Alliance through this appeal. The ACT Co-ordinating further requests $6,000 to cover ACT CO field monitoring trips to the region.
