ACT Alert

Nicaragua / Honduras - 2/05

Tropical Storm Beta

Geneva, 7 November 2005

The north east coastal areas of Honduras and Nicaragua are being affected by the remnants of a low- pressure system in the aftermath of Hurricane Beta, which has now been downgraded to a tropical depression.

ACT members in Honduras report that heavy rains for the last five days have caused extensive flooding in the department of Colon. To date 5,215 persons have been evacuated and 1,192 have been relocated to shelters. The national agency for disaster response COPECO reported on Friday that more rains were expected for the following 24 hours. According to official reports 105 houses have been destroyed and there are extensive losses to subsistence crops and cattle. November is the end of the rainy season, therefore, the soil is saturated and very prone to flooding.

ACT members in Honduras: Christian Aid (CA), Christian Commission for Development (CCD), DanChurchAid (DCA), HEKS and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) report that COPECO, in co-ordination with other national and local organisations, has been responding to the situation, providing basic assistance to the people in the shelters and clearing the roads. ACT members in Honduras report that their partners working in the area: the Mennonite Social Action Commission, CASM and The Union of organized Communities, UNICORAS have been responding to the situation distributing relief items and food provided by the World Food Program (WFP). The most immediate needs identified are food and potable water. ACT partners in the area are assessing the situation and an appeal might be forthcoming.
