Floods Wreak Havoc in parts of Kenya

Geneva, 7 May, 2003

Heavy rains are reported to have caused heavy flooding especially in parts of western Kenya, Nyanza, Central Rift Valley and the Coast Province. The rains that started in March have been increasing in intensity and the consequent flooding has so far caused the death of 33 people according to ACT member, Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK). Further damages reported include over 6,000 acres of crops destroyed, damage to 50 school structures, roads and bridges, including several homes as well as the Dadaab refugee camp, home to Somali refugees.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted that these areas will receive above normal rainfall until either June or July. The Kenyan government, the Red Cross and some NGOs including the churches have responded with the provision of relief items including shelter materials such as tarpaulins, clothes, medicines and food to the affected areas.

ACK is continuing to assess the needs of the affected people in their 1,500 parishes countrywide and wishes to further respond through the provision of shelter materials and food to approximately 75,000 households. They also plan to offer counseling services to the people who have suffered loss of relatives and property. So far they have estimated their response to cost over $3 million countrywide.
