Typhoon rains lash the Philippines

Geneva, 16 July, 2002

In a span of ten days, three strong typhoons have hit the Philippines: Gloria (International Name Chata’an); Hambalos (Nakri) and Inday (Halong). They have brought torrential rains that have triggered floods and landslides in at least five regions of the main island Luzon, including Metropolitan Manila.

According to the latest figures from the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), a total of 61 persons have died, 41 persons have been injured and 5 are reported missing. At least 1,366,618 persons or 296,693 families living in 165 municipalities and 26 cities have been affected by the inclement weather. The NDCC has placed the total damage brought by the rains at Peso 369 million. At least eight provinces are still submerged with floodwaters reaching as high as 12 feet. According to the meteorological office more typhoons are yet to come. Disaster response teams have rushed basic relief items to tens of thousands of people.

ACT member the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP) has already distributed at least 2,000 bags of relief goods. However, requests for assistance from member churches, regional ecumenical councils, church related organizations and people's organizations in the affected regions continue to arrive at the NCCP. Staff are in the process of consolidating these reports which may form the basis for an appeal.
