ACT Alert

Argentina - 1/2002

Winds & Rains

Geneva, 29 October, 2002

ACT member the Argentine Federation of Evangelical Churches reports that in the last two weeks, strong winds and rains have affected several regions in Argentina. In the southern province of Rio Negro, cities such as El Blson and Bariloche have been seriously affected by the heavy rains and resulting floods. Many of the more vulnerable and poor people have lost their homes and possessions.

In the eastern part of the country, Entre Rios province is under water and about 6,000 persons have had to abandoned their homes and lands.

In the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires City rains and winds - about 60 Km per hour- have caused great damages in the poorest neighbourhoods of Quilmes, La Boca, Ensenada, Berisso.

Although the government has sent assistance to the provinces and the affected areas in greater Buenos Aires, there is not enough food and medicines.

The Argentine Federation of Evangelical Churches is consulting with the various churches in the affected areas who report that resources are few and needs great.

All the local churches (Methodist, Waldensian, Congregationalist, Pentecostal and Evangelical Church of the River Plate) are ready to work with other institutions such as the Catholic Church, Caritas, the Salvation Army and NGOs as well as the State to assist the most severely affected.

The Argentine Federation of Evangelical Churches is putting together a project which will be sent to the ACT Co-ordinating Office in the next days.
