Response to Cyclone

ALERT: 7/2010 - March 15, 2010
Between 10 – 13 March 2010 cyclone Hubert hit the south east of Madagascar between Mahoro (Tamatave) and Mananjary (Fianarantsoa), about 700 kilometres south east of the capital Antananarivo. The heavy rains caused flooding in the south eastern, the middle and western regions of the country.
The BNGRC (National Government Disaster and Risk Management) has reported that 12 of the 110 districts have been affected; particularly hard hit were the areas in and around:
o Ambatondrazaka, Mahanoro,
o Nosy Varika, Mananjary, Manakara, Vohipeno, Farafangana,
o Ikongo, Ifanadiana, Ambatofinandrahana, Ambositra,
According to BNGRC, and confirmed by the staff of Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar (FJKM) the estimated damages are as follows:
o 14 deaths
o 02 injured
o 37.891 homeless
o 623 houses destroyed
o 2.605 houses flooded
o 37 891 in need of immediate assistance (food, shelter, potable water )
o 70-85 % of rice, bean and maize crops lost
o Many communication roads and bridges damaged
o Electricity and telephones disrupted
Under the co-ordination of BNGRC, the international and local NGOs had to evacuate people from their homes and provide some temporary shelters in churches and town halls. BNGRC called for a meeting with international and local NGOs to discuss the logistics of intervention. The government delivered as first help some relief food and medications to some of the victims. UNICEF helped to finance the assessment team for the affected areas.
ACT Alliance member SAF/FJKM participated in the collection of information and evacuating victims to safer places. SAF/FJKM made available for use its 27 emergency shelters that were built in the area last year with European Union and ICCO funding. SAF/FJK plans to provide medicines and distribute food and non food items as well as rehabilitate the drainage systems and clean the villages.
SAF/FJKM is in the process of preparing a funding request to be submitted to the ACT Alliance Secretariat.
